Darrington is a beautiful flight and a great little airport. There are several food options within 5-10 minutes walking distance, and lodging right off the SE corner of the approach end of runway 28. Google maps will give a great picture of the amenities. - Submitted by Russ Longdon

Friday Harbor Airport - Friday Harbor, WA

Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands of the Puget Sound is an excellent place for a meal or a visit. Friday Harbor is a short 5 minute walk from the airport. There are plenty of great places to eat, ample places to stay including small Inns and B&B's. You can take one of the many Orca watching boats or head out in a sea kayak. Come for the afternoon, or stay for a week, you'll have a great time. - Submitted by rayhardee

Grant County International Airport - Moses Lake, WA

Grant County International Airport formerly Larson Air Force Base boasts five paved runways including its massive 13,503' X 200' runway 32R suitable as an alternate landing site for the NASA space shuttle. Its air traffic controllers are notorious for being extremely flexible with requests such as multiple touch and goes in a single pass, random runways and virtually any IFR request which makes this airport a perfect site for training or just to brush up on your skills. Located in the terminal is the Jet-a-way Cafe where you can get a great BBQ sandwich or load up on ice cream. - Submitted by Nathan

Historic Flight Foundation - Spokane, WA

Historic Flight offers a collection of the most important aircraft produced between 1927 and 1957 - all restored and airborne again. Our mission goes beyond serving as trustees of an era. We want you to experience the roar of our F8F Wampus Cat taking off. Watch engineers at work restoring the aircraft to flying condition. Share the rush of viewing international treasures from all angles. Whether you're an experienced aviator, a student of history, or a newcomer to our world, we want to spark and fuel your passion - both for aviation and for epiphanies born from hard labor. Our heroes did not leap from the bathtub shrieking, Eureka! They scrawled a sketch on a piece of paper. Got interested in an impossible challenge. And then they dove into the work. The reward? Innovation that astonished both them and us, and that continues to change our world. - Submitted by Liz Matzelle

Mears Field Airport - Concrete, WA

Great airport to camp at. Just pull onto the south side grass near the tree line, setup camp and enjoy! The pilot's lounge has water, showers, a kitchen fully stocked with pots/pans/plates, stove, microwave and refrigerator. Computer for checking the weather and WIFI. 1 mile walk to town. 1/2 mile to a gas station/store and burger place on HWY 20. Fuel prices are a little steep, but maybe throw in a few gallons to help support keeping cool airports like this alive. I have no idea why more people don't camp here! It's super quiet, nice locals and you could even sleep on one of the several hide-a-bed sofas in the pilots lounge if you want. There is a donation box right outside the lounge, so leave some cash for a cheap camping experience. WPA passport stamp is in the pilot's lounge building. - Submitted by Russell Longdon

Mountain Camping - Enumclaw, WA

Ranger Creek enables you to really enjoy the outdoors. Snuggled deep in the White River Valley, close to Mount Rainier, you marvel at the sheer cliffs and towering ridges that surround the airport. The airport is also surrounded by a Forest Service Campground. Nearby hiking trails lead to Suntop Lookout, the Crest Trail, and Mount Rainier National Park. Only a few hundred feet south of the airport is the glacial White River. Deer and elk are commonly seen on the airfield and in the surrounding forest. An extremely popular camping area, the airport has easy access from State Highway 410. Just a few miles southeast is the Crystal Mountain Resort, a favorite winter recreation area. the field is a favored location for fly-ins, military training exercises, search and rescue training, and glider operations. The 2,875 foot asphalt runway makes the airport very popular. The 2650 foot field elevation combined with the surrounding terrain make summertime density altitude problems common. The gorgeous ridges and cliffs that provide such a spectacular view make Ranger Creek a good test of a pilot's mountain flying skills. It is not a place for the novice. The valley is relatively narrow and narrows significantly both to the north and south. Just north of the airfield the valley temporarily widens to the west, providing sufficient room for a gentle climbing turn. The camping areas are busy in the summer, and during the hunting seasons. Although heavily signed, the runway does get encroached on by pedestrians. Animals are common on the runway in the early morning and late evening. There are trees in both approaches. Turbulence and downdrafts are common over the river in the approach to runway 33. Overflight to check runway conditions, look for obstructions, and to make people on the ground aware of your presence is essential. Ranger Creek is generally open from June 1 to October 1. - Submitted by Jamie Renwick

Olympic Flight Museum - Olympia, WA

An exciting Air Museum right on the airfield. They have a wide variety of airworthy aircraft along with display aircraft. Exhibit Hours are seven days a week from 11 am to 5 pm. They host the Gathering of Warbirds in June for the past 7 years. - Submitted by rayhardee

Orcas Eastsound - Eastsound, WA

Any route to Eastsound is scenic over the San Juan Islands. Make sure to do your research and follow the noise abatement and other procedures. When you tie down it's a 10-minute walk on a trail into town to the south, or north to a little beach, or other directions to various bed breakfasts. The town of Eastsound has shops, restaurants, hotels, and even an interesting little museum. - Submitted by Beth Chapple
